Midnight Sun
Part 1

Umm... I've never attempted to write anything for Angelique before, but as I was getting ready for bed, a little plot bunny hopped into my head, and I had to write it down.
It's... shounenaiish... Julious + Clavis... and Oscar is worked in here somehow... but anyway. >>
It would help if anyone could offer me criticism on this, as I have absolutely NO idea what I'm doing, and am stabbing randomly at character here, doing the best I can. ^^;;
It's not a lot to go on, but it's a couple pages' worth of a beginning chapter... anyway... I'll stop talking your ear off and let you read... ne, please be honest and let me know what I can do with this, either positively or negatively. Erm... and I hope I'm not flooding up the ml with a bunch of partial fic text. ^^;;
If I'm not doing too horribly with it, I can try to turn it into a full fledged fic... but um... anyway.. here goes.

Midnight Sun, Part 1

"Checkmate."
Oscar's voice held a slight edge of smiling victory, as he placed his white Queen in the perfect, game-winning spot on the chess board.
His victory was cut short by the look in Julious' eyes.
For a moment, the stoic blonde barely acknowledged Oscar's move, and then in a sudden moment of revelation, realized that he'd been beaten. His smooth brow furrowed slightly, one perfect strand of blonde hair falling free of its impeccably kept style.
Oscar blinked in brief confusion. Usually Julious was more alert than this. Certainly, he was always keen to pay attention during their routine chess games. Today, though, he'd been careless, and in fact, that was really the only reason Oscar had won.
With a tilt of his flame-topped head, Oscar looked intently at Julious.
"What's wrong with you today?" he asked, simply.
Julious scowled inwardly. Trust Oscar to get to the heart of the matter, and not dance around with words. Truthfully, Julious was the only person that Oscar *didn't* mince words with. That spoke of a certain friendship and trust between them, and a close one at that.
'The sun's light stems from fire, Julious. Heat and light are hand in hand.'
That was what Oscar had said to him, some time ago, before they'd become good friends. Oscar seemed to get along with everyone, and slightly irritate everyone at the same time. Julious supposed that was simply the personality of the Guardian of Flame.
He was glad to have his thoughts turned to a subject that did not unnerve him, if only for a few moments.
// It suits him. // Julious mused, silently.
Consciousness came to him in the form of Oscar's burning ice-blue eyes staring straight into his own. He'd heard words, but hadn't been paying enough attention to form them into a coherent sentence.
An uneasy feeling rose in the pit of Julious' stomach from being caught unawares. It was not fitting for him, but he'd been completely distracted of late.
"Hm?" Julious groped dumbly for a reply.
"I said, you're acting awfully strange, Julious." Oscar replied, a little irked at having to repeat himself. "You're behaving like a smitten schoolgirl!"
Oscar gave a playful wink. "Don't tell me you're becoming distracted by my overwhelming charisma, now, Julious." he teased.
Julious' brows knit slightly, his eyes narrowing.
"Certainly not. My mind was simply on some unfinished business I have to tend to, now that our game is finished." Julious did not give Oscar the satisfaction of letting the redhead see him lose his composure.
"Just a joke, Julious, just a joke. I should have known your work has your hackles up."
He grinned, just slightly, and stood up.
"Since our game is over, I will let you leave to tend your 'unfinished business', then." He smiled, genuinely. "Tomorrow, we will see if you're still so distracted that you let me win again. Until then, Julious."
With a slight nod of his head and a flash of red hair, Oscar was gone, leaving Julious alone with the black and white marble chess pieces.
"Hn." A slight, cynical murmur emerged from Julious' lips, escaping before he could seal it off.
Better that Oscar didn't know what he was truly thinking about, or else he would never live it down. Oscar wouldn't be able to resist such tempting blackmail or teasing material. And honestly, there wasn't much that could be considered more tempting than this piece of scandalous fancy.
Julious placed his long, tapered fingers over one of the chess pieces, the white Queen that Oscar had used for his game-winning move. His fingers slid over its polished surface, taking in the pleasant, smooth feel of the stone.
"Ah. If only you knew, Oscar. You would laugh, and call me a fool. And this time, you would be right." Julious spoke to the chess piece as though it could hear him.
Needing something to occupy him for the moment, Julious took to setting the chess pieces back in their rightful spots. He saved the black King for last.
Putting it in its correct spot on the chess board, he let his fingers linger over the surface of that piece, calling an image to memory while he did so.
It was his secret, buried deeply within himself. Hidden far inside, in that part of himself that he never let anyone know, never let anyone see.
His private torture. His private longing. His private need.
He couldn't recall a time when he'd wanted someone more than he wanted his fellow Guardian. Guardian of Darkness.
Clavis.
He ached to hurl the small, black, shiny piece of stone across the room and watch it shatter into a million pieces, but he kept his composure.
He was Guardian of Light. He was Julious.
He was calm. He had perfect hold of himself. He had perfect control over his feelings.
But. day by day, he felt that control slipping between his fingers, like sand.

I think I'll go crawl under my desk now. *Twitch* um... again...criticism please? ^^;; *scrambles off*
